Refusing to be roped into endorsing a Democratic candidate for the Senate in North Carolina, superstar athlete and pitchman Michael Jordan explained:

“Republicans buy sneakers, too.”

Velonews is reporting that Spanish and French press are hinting at the possibility of Astana being left out of the 2008 Tour de France.  Contador, the winner of the 2007 Tour de France, has been rumored to be linked to Operacion Puerto, although he has been cleared by a Spanish judge.  The Italian ant-doping agency CONI has said it will take a fresh look at the Operacion Puerto investigation.  Many feel that the Italian authorities are intent on putting the spotlight back on the scandal that brought down Italian star Ivan Basso, but so far as not resulted in any sanctions against Spanish riders.

Wesly Ngetich, a two time champion of the Grandma’s Marathon and the 2007 winner, was killed in Kenya.  He was 3o years old.  Ever since the disputed presidential election on December 27th, there has been unrest, with more than 500 Kenyons being killed.

Ngetich had hoped to run a marathon in Phoenix this month, but was prevented from leaving Kenya when the fighting started.

1968 Pro Bowl

On this day in 1968, the Western Conference scores three fourth-Quarter touchdowns to beat the East 38-20, in the Pro Bowl at Los Angeles.  Gale Sayers, Bill Brown, and Richie Pettibon all score in the decisive surge for the West.  Sayers is named the outstanding offensive performer of the game for the second year in a row.  He’ll win the award again in 1970 before a series of knee injuries forces his early retirement.

On this day in 2004, Earnie Els of South Africa celebrates with his daughter after winner the Sony-Hawaiian Open for the second straight year in a sudden-death playoff.  Today, on the third extra hole, he drained a 30-footer to bear Harrison Frazier of Texas; last year, he converted a 40-foot putt to defeat Aaron Baddely of Autstralia.  Els became the first back-to-back winner of the Hawaiian Open since Corey Pavin in 1986 and ’87 and the first golfer to win the same tourney back-to-back since Nick Faldo at the Masters in 1989 and ’90.

On this day in 2001, Dave Winfield and Kirby Puckett are elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility.  Winfield is one of only seven players with over 3,000 hits and 400 home runs (3,110 and 465).  Puckett, the dynamic star of the Minnesota Twins, collected more hits (2,040) in his first 10 calendar years (1984-93) than anyone in history.  They’ll be joined by two Veterans Committee selections, Pittsburgh second baseman Bill Mazeroski and pitcher Hilton Smith of the Negro Leagues.

On this day in 2005, Michelle Kwan wins her ninth US Figure Skating championship with a bravura performance at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon.  Offering a near flawless exhibition while skating to the music of Bolero, Kwan earns four perfect (6.0) scores from the judges for her four minute program, easily beating runner up Sasha Cohen.  Her ninth title ties the feat of legendary Maribel Vinson (Owen), 1928-37, who died in 1951 with the rest of the US figure skating team in a plane crash in Belguim.

Virginia downs Duke

On January 14, 1995 – Virginia rallies from a 46-23 deficit with 18 minutes left a Cameron Indoor Stadium and overtakes Duke, 91-88, in double overtime.  The Cavaliers go with a three-guard offense and score points on 19 of their last 22 possessions in regulation to forge a 71-71 deadlock.  Junior Burrough leads the Wahoos with 23 points, while Cory Alexander and Harold Deane add 22 each.  Duke struggles without their coach, Mike Krzyzewski, who will miss the rest of the year recovering from back surgery.
